Deep Dive Thursday – Teaching Little Leaguers to Consistently Hit the Cutoff Man

It’s as old as baseball itself…the saying, “Hit the Cutoff Man!!!” has been around for ages. It’s one of the most fundamental skills an outfielder, any baseball player for that matter, needs to learn and master. This is one of those things that can be kind of confusing because it requires you to, you know, actually use your brain and painful stuff like that. But hey, baseball IS a thinking man’s game after all.

There are a ton of drills out there reinforcing the importance of hitting the cutoff man, but I really like this one below. It’s with Cal Ripken and his brother, Billy. What I like about it is that they stress WHY you’re doing it, and they do it in such an obvious and simple way that you can really see how the kids just “get it.” Plus, they’re offering little side tips during the drill and you can see the players’ performance immediately improve after just a sentence or two of instruction. It’s good stuff.

Have a watch and let us know what you think…
